Meet the winners of Mosaic Mobile 2019!

The Mosaic Mobile film competition encourages high school and college students to shoot, edit, and submit a short film, using only their mobile device. Each annual competition has a unique theme, prop, and saying that the students must implement into their pieces.

This year, the theme was belonging, the prop was signs, and the words “I never thought of that” had to be shown or spoken in the film.

First Place ($1,000) – Mariah Barrera, City High Middle School, “Red, White, Green.”

Mariah’s film explores colors as a representation of her identity and Latina heritage. Her narration describes her struggle to find where she belonged in a community of various races, languages, and colors.

Second Place ($500) – Sophia DiPiazza, Careerline Tech Center, “Journey to Belonging.”

Sophia’s film takes the audience on a journey to discover the true meaning of “belonging” and how she found her place on her cross-country team. She does not sugarcoat the awkward nature of life or its ups and downs, but encourages others to embrace their journey.

Third Place ($250) – Kaleigh Kenyon, Careerline Tech Center, “Belonging is Overrated.”

Kaleigh’s film utilized different audio techniques and characters wearing white, faceless masks to demonstrate the social norm of “fitting in.” Through a variety of text on the screen, this film encourages viewers to blaze their own trail and stand out from the crowd.

Rick Wilson Memorial Award (via public vote)($500) – Xiangyu Chen, East Grand Rapids High School, “A Second Story.

Xaingyu’s film told his story of navigating assimilation and cultural preservation after immigrating to the United States. He also addresses the dangers of perpetuating stereotypes, as they are incomplete and grow from single-sided stories.

The star-studded and inspiring 2019 Mosaic Event at The Wealthy Theatre served as the culmination of the Mosaic Mobile contest. We screened the top 10 finalist films in the main auditorium, in front of hundreds of students, as well as local teachers and industry professionals, and our special guests from across the country. Congratulations to all of our amazing students and their winning films and all the students who submitted short films this year!
